5 things learned about England after comeback Slovenia win

England’s march towards Euro 2016 took another giant stride as Roy Hodgson’s charges came from a goal behind to eventually blow Slovenia away 3-1 at Wembley, but what did we really learn?

There is no competition for top spot in Group E

Switzerland were supposed to be England’s big challengers in Group E having qualified for the knock-out stages in Brazil.

However, to their enormous credit Hodgson’s revamped side quickly dispelled that theory with a convincing 2-0 triumph on Swiss soil and after seeing off Slovenia to open up a six-point gap at the top of the group, they look out of sight already.

The team has character as well as skill

Before Jordan Henderson’s unfortunate own goal against Slovenia this post-World Cup Three Lions side hadn’t faced a deficit in any of their three previous qualifiers.

It was therefore particularly encouraging to see the response led by golden-cap collecting Wayne Rooney, who rolled back the years when dribbling his way into winning and then scoring a penalty in almost immediate fashion to initiate the comeback.

Jack Wilshere is the right man to anchor the midfield

A gifted midfielder he’s always been, but until now Arsenal and England’s supposed saviour has suffered from an identity crisis, thanks to his multi-faceted talents.

Not any more though. Wilshere’s place as the deep-lying, ball-spraying quarter-back was confirmed with yet another assured display where his ability to pick out Rooney with the long pass could be the start of a very promising relationship for England.

Adam Lallana provides a creative spark

Liverpool fans will have been greatly encouraged by their £25m signing’s display on the night where he had a hand in both of Danny Welbeck’s goals.

Lallana has not quite hit the heights for his new employers since leaving Southampton, but he’s now shown he can be a really important player for his country which bodes well.

Nathaniel Clyne has the best claims for right-back slot

The clamour for Clyne to get a chance at right-back was finally met with his inclusion in Hodgson’s side and the Saints’ full-back proved his worth.

He hardly put a foot wrong defensively, was a able to retain possession comfortably and his pace is a threat going forward.
