DP World Tour Championship: Poulter nailed on for top-five finish

Led by favourite Rory McIlroy, the European Tour’s finest line up for the season-ending DP World Tour Championships in Dubai, and of the 60-strong field few have better claims on the trophy than Ian Poulter.
Considering McIlroy’s stellar season’s achievements heading to Jumeirah Golf Estates – he has claimed two majors, won the Race To Dubai title and will finish 2014 as the world number one – punters would be excused for sticking a few bob on the sensational Ulsterman at 4/1.
However, while the 2012 winner of this event earned the right to take a five-week break before appearing in the showpiece European Tour finale, potential rustiness could be a concern to backers.
A lack of motivation could also be cited in the negative column, as nobody is now able to catch Wee Mac as the European Tour winner, though the prize money and prestige should be enough on their own, in theory.
Another man, who will have no such issues with hunger for silverware, is 2013 and 2010 runner-up, Poulter.
At a course where his lowest finish in five showings is 26th, including three top 10s, the 16/1 about the Englishman winning the title is a particularly alluring price, and that’s before considering his current form.

After an indifferent start to the European Tour’s play-off series at Lake Malaren, the chequered-trouser wearing Brit turned in a sixth-place finish at the WGC-HSBC, before losing out to Brooks Koepka by a single shot in Turkey last week.
With unfinished business this season and at this event in particular, the 11/8 on a top-10 finish looks elementary for Poulter, while the 10/3 on the top-five is the best of the lot.
