Take on Ladbrokes’ new ‘Name the A-League legend’ challenge

Published:

How well do you know the Australian A-League? If, like us, the answer is not a lot, then you may well be surprised at some of the big names plying their football trade down under.

With the likes of Michael Bridges and Emile Heskey among the legends to have played the beautiful game south of the equator, here are five cryptic clues to stars – both established and obscure, currently loving the land of Neighbours.

Though you may be more familiar with me from a Simpsons beverage, I’ve actually won Premier League titles, League Cups, the Intertoto Cup and reached the final of the Europa League. I’ve also found the net at a World Cup and been relegated three times in my career – who am I?

I was once dubbed the “new Roy Keane” after impressing north of the border and played for two teams in the Premier League as well as one current top-flight side having a tough time of things. I’ve also played at international level and share my surname with a current misfiring Blackpool striker – who am I?

Despite being Australian, I am best remembered for the four-year spell I enjoyed at a feral-themed side in the Championship, though they have gone on to better things since. I then did a bit of a Michael Barrymore was as “all white” before driving a Tractor, albeit temporarily, and then returning to my homeland – who am I?

I’ve played for two Premier League clubs in my time –both of whom remain in the top flight today – while I also scored a rather fortuitous goal during a World Cup where I also played against the Three Lions themselves. A midfielder by trade I’ve been a runner up in the Championship and FA Cup and only recently moved to Australia from my previous cat-like employers – who am I?

You may not remember me that well but I’ve actually played 30 times for a national side not too far away from English shores and have represented eight different Football League sides during my career to date. My longest and best spell came with a team that liked to hunt for goals in packs while I was recently on the books at a London club that no one likes – though they don’t care – who am I?
