Liverpool cast nets towards Serie A in search of goalkeeper

Rumours linking Liverpool to fresh goalkeeping talents are showing no sign of abating, as the latest murmurs focus on Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto.

The 25-year-old Brazilian has already caught the eye of Italian champions Juventus this season, keeping five clean sheets as part of a Viola defence which ranks the fourth meanest in Serie A.

Neto has reportedly turned down Juve’s advances, though his refusal to sign a new deal at Fiorentina on a contract due to expire next summer, has not escaped the attention of Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers is growing increasingly anxious to capture some competition for Simon Mignolet, who has been singled out for his contribution to the Reds’ suspect defence this term.

Neto could well fit the frame, especially after the trail linking released Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes to an Anfield switch went stone cold earlier in the autumn.

A January bid therefore could be in the offing from the Premier League club, though it’s also suggested in some reports that Rodgers would prefer to wait until summer to sign Neto on a free.

For Liverpool’s many shell-shocked supporters, disillusioned with their side’s failure to reproduce anything near to the football of last season, acting in January to bring in another stopper will feel like the much better option.

By that point Liverpool could well have been ejected from the Champions League, where the 10/11 shots to qualify must almost certainly win their last two Group B games to reach the knock-out stages.

Considering the Reds have taken just three points from their opening four matches, these odds feels a little on the skinny side.

Basel are also priced at 10/11 and the Swiss side, who beat Liverpool 1-0 at home, travel to Anfield last in what could be the decider.
