Liverpool transfer saga in full swing as MLS calls for star

The revelation, born out of a simple aside during an interview, that Steven Gerrard could leave the club if his expiring contract is not renewed at the end of the season has opened the doors of speculation surrounding the midfielder to a stream of rumour-carrying rats.
Manchester City were the club linked with the 34-year-old over the weekend and now, in a completely unsurprising development, the ever-growing footballing haven that is the MLS has presented itself as an option.
Well, it’s not strictly the MLS, as New York Cosmos – the club linked with a move for Gerrard should he leave Liverpool as a free agent – play in the North American Soccer League, a level below the gold standard of US soccer.
However, with Real Madrid legend Raul already signed up for next season and the club hell-bent on joining the MLS to rival fellow Big Apple associations New York City FC and New York Red Bulls, it doesn’t seem like a plunge into the big pool is far beyond the Cosmos.
Obviously Raul’s commitment to the club will be a big pull for Gerrard, with former Reds chief executive Rick Parry’s position on the Cosmos board another feather in the cap for the 2013 Soccer Bowl champs.
Should the one-time England skipper want a direct move to America’s top-flight though, then other avenues are available to him.
The LA Galaxy are one option, while it’s reasonable to assume nearly every franchise in the division would be willing to secure Gerrard’s services.
For now though, England’s answer to Andrea Pirlo must focus on retaining the Reds’ Champions League status, something rated as a 6/4 possibility after their latest loss to Newcastle.
