Meet the former Celtic target leading Israel to Euro 2016

Much has been made of the double threat of Belgium and Bosnia Herzegovina blocking Wales’ route to Euro 2016, but Chris Coleman will no doubt also be wary of the only team in Group B with a 100 per cent record still intact – Israel.

And if there is one man out to prove a point for the Blues and Whites it’s the striker who has already racked up four goals in qualifying: Omer Damari.

That name will not mean much to fans of Premier League football but for Celtic supporters it should most definitely ring a bell.

Back in 2011 the Israeli forward was regarded as one of the hidden gems of the European game, having just scored 17 goals in 35 games for Maccabi Petah Tikva back in his homeland.

Valued at around €2m by his Israeli employers, the Bhoys emerged as contenders to land the 21-year-old striker.

But things soon changed after Celtic seemingly took issue with Maccabi Petah Tikva and reports claiming the club had told Israeli news sources that Damari was moving to Celtic Park.

Those comments, coupled with an agreement that his former club receive 30 per cent of any sell-on fee – was enough to see the Hoops pull the plug on the deal, with the forward first moving to Hapoel Tel Aviv and more recently Austria Vienna.

But despite this setback goals have followed Damari wherever he has gone, with the striker scoring 56 in 101 games for Hapoel and nine in his first 13 games in Austria.

And Damari will no doubt be keen to show Celtic what they missed out on and potentially do Wales a favour when Israel face Bosnia Herzegovina with the 25-year-old available at 9/4 to score anytime.

With five goals in his last three appearances for the national side, Coleman may want to keep a close eye on this forward.
