Spurs v Liverpool: Can either top-four wannabe turn it around?

Published:

Following bleak autumns where both Liverpool and Tottenham find themselves in the wrong half of the Premier League table after the internationals, can either of these so-called giants rescue their faltering seasons?

The short answer at this interval is most probably; no. Tottenham in 12th are rated as 9/1 shots to make the top-four pipe-dream a reality, while Liverpool are much shorter at 19/10 despite only residing a place above the Londoners.

With Manchester City (1/50), Arsenal (1/2) and Manchester United (8/13) ahead of the floundering pair, thick clouds are gathering above White Hart Lane and Anfield respectively.

Tottenham

Things are looking decidedly dicey for Spurs, as they struggle to adapt to the demands of Mauricio Pochettino’s management and the Argentine attempts in turn to deal with deadwood.

Only young hope Harry Kane appears to have an eye for goal, while big-name strikers Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor continue to go missing.

January dealings offer some chance of a lift, but defensively the quality simply isn’t there in the Lilywhites squad.

Verdict: Europa League at best

Liverpool

Even the most positive of fortune tellers would struggle to convince the Reds will hold onto their Champions League status, especially as Daniel Sturridge will now miss another six weeks of action.

In this ultra-busy festive period, being bereft of Studger is an absolute nightmare for Brendan Rodgers, who must rely instead on goal-less Premier League trio, Fabio Borini, Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli.

There is hope in the guise of Divock Origi’s potential January arrival and the improving form of Adam Lallana.

However, combining a lack of goals with such a regularly-exposed defence made up of overhyped and underperforming players is a recipe for disaster.

Verdict: Top four looking like a miracle
