Swiss star ready to move abroad as Arsenal interest increases

Arsenal’s hopes of prising Fabian Schar away from Basel have been boosted after the defender revealed he is ready to fulfil his dream and play abroad.

The Swiss international has been heavily linked with a move to the Gunners, and a host of other top European clubs, and is now ready to further his career with a January move.

His current club Basel are willing to open negotiations over a deal to keep the 22-year-old at St.Jakob-Park but for now the centre-back is focused on his own performances.

He told Swiss newspaper Blick: “Basel are open to negotiations, but at this moment I have decided that I want to concentrate on my performances.

“I went through a difficult period and it wasn’t the right time to discuss my renewal. I don’t want to be worrying about that now.”

Schar, who has made eight appearances for Switzerland, dreams of plying his trade in one of Europe’s top leagues with clubs in the Bundesliga, Premier League and Serie A on alert after the player’s statements.

“My dream remains to have an experience abroad. I’ve always said that if the opportunity presented itself, I would take it, obviously in agreement with Basel.

“I need a team with important prospects. I’d like the Bundesliga, Premier League or top Italian clubs like Inter, Milan and Juventus. I couldn’t say no.”

“I want to hear all my options and consider them carefully. There was some contact in the summer, but nothing serious,” he added.

Arsenal are desperate for defensive reinforcements with both Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny sidelined through injury.

At present Calum Chambers, who impressed at centre-half at the start of the season, is filling in at right-back with Nacho Monreal playing at the heart of the Gunners’ defence alongside Per Mertesacker.

Arsene Wenger, whose side are 20/1 to win the Premier League after their 3-0 win over Burnley at the weekend, is desperately scouring the market to sign a defender in January and after Schar’s revelations the Gunners boss could be ready to make a concrete move for the highly-rated Swiss star.
