Aston Villa the only winners if they land swap deal with Spurs

There are so many midfielders at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal that the Tottenham boss has the rare luxury of using half for the Premier League and exclusively holding the others back for the Europa League campaign.
Benjamin Stambouli, Paulinho and Mousa Dembele have all made more starts in the UEFA competition than they have in the top-flight, leaving them undoubtedly frustrated at the thought they are nothing more than Lilywhites reserves.
The latter pair, having been at the club for two and three years respectively, may look to find more regular football elsewhere when the January transfer window opens in a few weeks, with one destination already on the cards for Dembele.
It’s reported that Aston Villa are keen to augment Spurs’ interest in their own midfield man, Fabian Delph, with a swap deal for the Belgian water carrier, but that would be a move that only benefited the midlands club.
The former Fulham man would be a significant boost to Paul Lambert’s current middle band and would quickly rediscover the form that made him a vital cog in the White Hart Lane engine should he have the chance to start regular games.
On the flip side of the deal, things look less rosy for Spurs and Delph should it proceed.
Firstly, the fact that Pochettino has two sets of three – Etienne Capoue, Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb have been his Premier League trio – to pick from in any given competition smacks of over indulgence from the north London club.
Such overzealousness has left the former Southampton tactician unsure of his preferred competition and has resulted in inconsistent performances as his tinkering takes its toll.
Adding Delph would do the team, and the player, no favours especially as the Villa man is enjoying an upturn in his reputation to the point of winning international caps, which he’d struggle to add to among the Spurs midfield crowd.
