Coloccini standout contender in next Newcastle manager market

| 30.12.2014

Fabricio Coloccini looks the value pick in Ladbrokes’ next permanent Newcastle manager market with the Argentine still an outsider for the top job despite reports linking the defender with a move into the role.

The bookmaker has the 32-year-old at 10/1 to replace Alan Pardew in the St James’ Park hot seat, with the former West Ham manager closing in on a return to Crystal Palace – the club he was captain of during his playing days.

Coloccini is one of the senior players at Newcastle, has been a vocal presence in the Magpies’ dressing room and, most crucial of all, enjoys a close working relationship with club owner Mike Ashley.

A player/manager role could also be enough to convince the defender to remain on Tyneside amid speculation suggesting he would depart the club come the summer.

The South American star is not the only candidate however with Hull manager Steve Bruce the current favourite to land the job at 5/2 with the bookmaker.

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood, meanwhile, is the second

favourite for the top job at 7/2 while Tony Pulis is offered at 5/1 though the former Stoke and Palace boss is thought to be in talks with West Brom.

The Baggies parted company with coach Alan Irvine late yesterday after losing 2-0 to the Potters on Sunday.

Ally McCoist is also in the running with Ashley’s close ties to Rangers making the Gers boss a contender to be appointed at 10/1.

St Etienne manager Christophe Galtier is the dark horse to land the job, with the

French coach out at 12/1 to be named next permanent Newcastle boss.

The ASSE coach was linked with the Magpies job back in May and with St Etienne faring well in Ligue 1, he could yet emerge as a contender to take over from Pardew.

For the time being though, it’s Coloccini who looks the value pick.
