Leicester scoping out MLS superstar to make instant impact

| 06.12.2014

Leicester City are stuck in a deepening Premier League rut and in order to dig themselves out they are on the hunt for fresh faces fit for the survival challenge in January.

To this end, rumours are afoot that the Foxes will test Toronto FC’s resolve over former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

The Englishman has acquitted himself well during his first full season with mid-table Toronto in the MLS, scoring 11 goals for his latest club.

However, with the 2014 MLS season now concluded in its regular form, the bright lights of the Premier League could be enough to tempt the 32-year-old into some off-season action.

Now feeling the burden of 19 other top-flight teams sitting above them, the Foxes have arguably never been in such dire need of a fox-in-the-box of Defoe’s ilk.

Since their pulsating comeback win against Manchester United back in mid-September, Nigel Pearson’s mob haven’t been able to muster another victory in nine, whilst critically losing seven of those.

A meagre tally of 10 points from 14 matches sees the Midlands outfit cast as 23/20 relegation bets, though encouragingly for Foxes fans, QPR and Burnley still come ahead of them in the market.

The general consensus is that Leicester can still hoist the handbrake on this dismal run of form, though additions such as Defoe would aid this process no end.

Only a smattering of sides have found the net less times than Pearson’s side in the top flight during 2014/15.

Also carrying another unwanted mantle of owning the second-leakiest defence in the Premier League, signing a defender is also high on the January shopping list.

As yet, no concrete names have surfaced, but any shortlist is likely to be pooled from experienced top-flight players currently struggling for game-time at other clubs.
