Liverpool job far from Dutchman’s reach, despite familiar tactics

Whenever a manager is under pressure it’s common for the media to line up candidate after candidate to replace the beleaguered boss, with each one supposedly guaranteed to do a better job than the man in situ.
Far rarer is the sight of managers openly muscling in on a post that is potentially becoming available. That seems to be just the case with Ajax manager Frank de Boer, though, if the latest quotes attributed to his brother Ronald are anything to go by.
Having eyed a move to the Premier League since last summer, it is of little surprise to see someone from the Dutchman’s circle make timely comments over his interest in the Liverpool post, just as the pressure cranks up on Brendan Rodgers – third favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave at 3/1.
“If Liverpool come now he would certainly think about it. He would certainly not close the door immediately, like he did two years ago,” the 44-year-old’s twin brother said.
That Anfield rebuffing came before the Reds hired Rodgers and De Boer has since gone on to become the first manager to win four consecutive Eredivisie titles as manager of the Amsterdam club.
With his stock obviously high, the 112-cap international perhaps sees this as the perfect time for a new challenge at a bigger club, especially after missing out on the Tottenham job to Mauricio Pochettino last summer.
Back then, just like it’s emerging now, De Boer made his intentions to take over at the north London outfit clear. Ironically it was that public statement that ultimately cost him the role, but it seemingly hasn’t deterred the former Barcelona icon.
A penchant for league titles clearly makes De Boer an attractive proposition for Liverpool, who are 11/2 shots for the top four, but it remains unclear whether the one-time sweeper can replicate that success in a far more competitive envrionment, with his 11 wins in 38 European games managed an unhelpful statistic to his cause.
