Meet the hotshot Villarreal striker Leicester are fighting for

Published:

Leicester have a happy recent record when it comes to signing Argentine strikers, with Leonardo Ulloa’s arrival from Brighton largely viewed as a success so far despite the front man enduring a nine-game barren run.

So there is little surprise in seeing the Foxes, who also harbour La Albiceleste icon Esteban Cambiasso among their number, heading down a familiar South American route with their latest transfer target.

The Premier League’s bottom club, and 11/10 relegation candidates according to Ladbrokes, are battling Inter Milan and Newcastle for the signature of in-form Villarreal striker Luciano Vietto.

In his first season in European football, Vietto has started well for the Yellow Submarines netting six times from just nine starts.

Half of the Balnearia native’s strikes have come in starts, while Vietto has shown an affinity for finding the net from the bench in notching his other three goals in eight appearances as a substitute.

Not content with just taking the glory of sticking the ball in the back of the net, the former Estudiantes youth has registered four assists so far this term this season too and is developing quickly thanks to Villarreal’s involvement in the Europa League.

Should the Foxes land their man, who scored 18 times in 69 games for Racing Club in his homeland before moving to Spain, it would be considered quite a coup considering the stature of other interested parties.

However, with Ulloa and Cambassio on hand to help the recruitment drive and Leicester likely to offer Vietto more playing time than either Inter or Newcastle, it’s a race that Nigel Pearson could well win.
