AFCON: Ivory Coast anguish and Aboubakar glory in 3 top tips

Published:

The Africa Cup of Nations continues this Tuesday with the 3/1 tournament favourites Ivory Coast in action against Guinea and already looking a decidedly dodgy prospect to take home the trophy.

Elsewhere a tasty encounter between Cameroon and Mali offers up the chance to see one of the hottest goalscoring prospects from the continent in action and with all the games broadcast on Eurosport, we’ve picked out three great tips to help keep things lively.

It takes a brave man to go against a team containing the Premier League talents of the Toure brothers, Cheick Tiote and Wilfried Bony among others but top-flight English success has not translated into national team glory so far for the Elephants, who head into this one out of shape.

Cameroon hammered the Ivory Coast 4-1 in qualifying while Herve Renard’s team also lost 4-3 to DR Congo along the way and after recent friendly defeats to South Africa and an under-strength Sweden it could pay to back the underdogs here.

Vincent Aboubakar to score first @ 5/1

A standout pick for tournament top scorer at 18/1, Aboubakar comes into the competition off the back of a rip-roaring scoring run with the Indomitable Lions, having netted five goals across each of his previous four appearances for Cameroon.

Currently with Porto, the 22-year-old was also on the scoresheet for the Portuguese giants in a Taca da Liga win over Rio Ave and after netting the opener in three of his last four outings for Cameroon – including a recent 1-1 friendly draw with South Africa – he looks a solid pick here.

Cameroon (-1) to beat Mali @ 11/4

Dark horses to win the competition at 8/1, Cameroon could start with a bang here against a Mali side who have lost three of their last five, including a 2-0 loss to lowly Malawi.

With Cameroon riding high after a 4-1 triumph over Ivory Coast en route to these finals, coupled with 2-0 wins over Sierra Leone and DR Congo, the handicap victory looks a tempting prospect indeed.
