Australian Open Day 4: Granollers upset one of three best bets

The early rounds of any tennis Major can be quite mundane with – the odd upset aside – the big name players blazing through the opening stages with relative ease.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t betting opportunities, however, and while Serena Williams and Roberto Bautista-Agut may be odds-on to win their second round matches we’ve looked at ways to find better value.

So, backing the American powerhouse to record a quick victory and the Spaniard to take a straight sets win looks like solid advice.

We also think we’ve spotted some value with Marcel Granollers-Pujol, with the Spaniard odds-against to beat Giles Simon despite a winning head-to-head record.

Serena Williams v Vera Zvonareva – Under 17.5 games @ 8/11

With a 7-2 head-to-head record against the Russian and after demolishing Alison van Uytvanck in the last round Williams goes into this tie as the overwhelming 1/16 favourite.

But better value can be had by backing the American to keep her game losses to a minimum with odds of 8/11 on a total of under 17.5.

The five-time champion has gone under this total in seven of her last eight matches in the first two rounds of the Aussie Open and after taking her last meeting with Zvonareva 6-1, 6-0 a similar result can be expected here.

Bautista-Agut to beat Gilles Muller 3-0 @ 15/8

Bautista-Agut dispatched Luxembourg’s world number 42 in straight sets when they last met in the 2013 French Open.

The Spaniard is the odds-on favourite to win this match and also coming into the clash in good form, having dropped just a single set in his last nine wins.

Marcel Granollers-Pujol to beat Gilles Simon @ 5/2

Granollers isn’t in the best form – having lost four matches on the spin before arriving in Melbourne.

However, he took his opening match 3-0 and boasts a 4-1 head-to-head record against Simon, wining their last three meetings.

Simon isn’t exactly in a purple patch either, losing five of his last six before making the trip Down Under.
