Fresh twist in next Newcastle manager betting as Garde moves out

Newcastle United appear no closer to appointing their next permanent manager, if the latest odds from Ladbrokes are to be believed.

Former Lyon manager Remi Garde has moved further out in betting following several days of inactivity regarding the Frenchman’s potential recruitment to the St James’ Park club.

The ex-Arsenal player is believed to have held talks with Magpies owner Mike Ashley over the move last week but has so far failed to comment on the outcome of those discussions.

Garde was working as a co-commentator for French television station Canal+ on Sunday, stating during the live broadcast: “No comment regarding Newcastle. I cannot say anything today.”

This non-committal response has seen several other candidates remain in the running to land the job with Derby County manager Steve McClaren still second favourite in the betting at 5/2 with Ladbrokes.

The Rams boss has previously moved to rebuff any suggestion he would take up the role, if offered, however with Derby in the midst of a Championship promotion battle the bookies seem to believe McClaren may be tempted should the opportunity present itself.

John Carver remains the 9/2 third-favourite, though the caretaker Newcastle boss has done himself few favours following a run of three defeats in the three games he has been in charge at the club.

Meanwhile another surprise candidate for the job has emerged in former Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup with the Dane priced at 5/1 with the bookmaker despite only recently taking the helm at Qatari club Lekhwiya.

Despite only recently moving into the role, however, it has been noted that the ex-Swans man only penned a one-year contract with the mega-rich club meaning a deal could yet be ironed out.

Tim Sherwood also remains an outside bet for the job at 12/1, though the former Tottenham coach’s reported desire to remain close to London is likely to hinder any move to the north east.

Former Hamburg manager Bruno Labbadia is also on at 20/1 with the bookmaker, while an announcement on who will be the next Newcastle appointment is expected in the coming days.
