Manchester City favourites to capture Southampton striker this month

Jay Rodriguez could be set to make the big move from Southampton to Manchester this January, if the latest odds from Ladbrokes are to be believed.

The 25-year-old has emerged as a surprised January target for Manchester City with the Premier League champions reportedly lining up a £20m bid for the former Burnley man that could test the Saints’ resolve to hold on to the England international.

Rodriguez is now 5/2 to move to the Etihad this month, with the Sky Blues ahead of previous suitors Tottenham and Liverpool in the betting with Ladbrokes.

The bookmaker has Spurs at 4/1 to land the striker, who has long been linked with a move to White Hart Lane while the Reds, who are believed to be in the market for a striker this month, are available at 5/1.

Rodriguez remains on the sidelines at present after incurring a serious knee injury last April that put paid to his chances of appearing at the World Cup in Brazil.

Prior to that setback the forward had scored 17 goals in 39 games for Southampton as part of a memorable 2013-14 campaign that saw him force his way into Roy Hodgson’s plans for the Three Lions.

He has remained hot property in the Premier League though and Punters seeking an outside bet in the Rodriguez transfer market meanwhile may be tempted by the 8/1 offered on Manchester United given the weekend’s events at Old Trafford.

Loan-signing Radamel Falcao was left out of the Red Devils squad for the 1-0 home defeat to Southampton on Sunday with manager Louis van Gaal citing “tactical reasons” as the chief cause behind his absence.

However the Colombian has only manager three goals for United so far this season and with Robin van Persie also failing to hit the high notes for the club this term another goalscorer could yet be recruited this month.
