From Ricardo to Pressman: 5 great penalty-scoring goalkeepers

Published:

After 120 minutes of football, it took a spot kick from West Ham goalkeeper Adrian to send the London club through to the fourth round of the FA Cup but the Spaniard is not the first no.1 to step up from the spot.

In the wake of that result, we’ve put our heads together at Ladbrokes to come up with a top five of the best penalty-scoring goalkeepers in the history of the game.

Featuring brilliant Brazilians, a Turin-loving German and a Sheffield Wednesday legend, read on to find out who hit the target for us.

Kevin Pressman

A Sheffield Wednesday legend with over 400 appearances to his name for the Owls, the big-boned Pressman earned himself a special place in Yorkshire folklore after saving and scoring decisive penalties for Wednesday during a 1998 FA Cup clash with Watford.

Hans Jorg Butt

As amusing as his name may be to the juvenile among us, Butt is no laughing matter to Juventus fans.  The German stopper scored spot-kicks against the Bianconeri for three different Bundesliga sides – Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich – in the Champions League.

Ricardo

An unpopular choice among England fans perhaps, but Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo warrants an inclusion in this list following his ballsy display against the Three Lions at Euro 2004, with the former Sporting Lisbon stopper saving and scoring in a penalty shootout for the hosts.

Rogerio Ceni

The Brazilian is a cult figure in the world of football, having scored over 100 goals during his 22-year-association with Sao Paolo with 38 of Ceni’s first 100 coming via penalties. Take a look at this “Paneka” effort from a Campeonato Paulista shootout with Corinthians from 2013.

Jose Chilavert

Like Ceni, Chilavert was a South American keeper with a penchant for taking penalties and free-kicks wherever possible. In 1999 the Paraguayan became the first goalkeeper to score a hat-trick in the history of football during a match for Velez Sarsfield with all three coming from the spot.
