Transfer wishlist: Securing Man Utd youngster vital for Burnley

| 07.01.2015

Which areas do they need to strengthen?

Burnley could really do with the sort of transfer budget only available to the Premier League’s elite, having struggled in both defence and attack in the top flight.

Holding onto top scorer Danny Ings is fundamental to survival, but supplementing his goals with another signing is of similar importance, as only Aston Villa (11) have scored less goals than the 19 Burnley have mustered thus far.

Given the extent of injury problems to Burnley’s backline and high number of goals conceded, defensive reinforcements should feature prominently on Dyche’s shopping list too.

Who have they been linked with?

Jermain Defoe, Michael Keane, James Vaughan, Shaun Maloney, Troy Deeney, Scott Sinclair, Nemanja Gudelj

January Wishlist Best Buys

Michael Keane (Manchester United)

Chances of Signing: A permanent deal would be optimum, though extending the United youngster’s loan until at least the summer is essential given the injury crisis in defence. The emergence of fellow trainees Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair at Old Trafford bodes well for Burnley’s chances of wrestling him away.

Jermain Defoe (FC Toronto)

Chances of Signing: With several Premier League clubs including Liverpool, QPR, Leicester and Hull reportedly interested in bringing the 32-year-old back across the pond, Burnley will have their work cut out.

Shaun Maloney (Wigan)

Chances of Signing: The Sun isn’t always the best source of verifiable gossip, but it’s clear the Scotland international wants to leave the DW, which works in the Clarets’ favour.

We Recommend…

Fabio Borini (Liverpool)

Even if it is on loan, the Italian is clearly surplus to requirements up at Anfield and proved to be a very useful source of goals for struggling Sunderland last season. His face just doesn’t fit at Liverpool.
