Ghana v Equatorial Guinea: Celtic loan star can come to life

Published:

Ghana head into Wednesday’s showpiece semi-final as the undoubted favourites to progress but Equatorial Guinea are in the midst of a fantasy run to the last four and may not want to leave dreamland just yet.

The Black Stars are 8/11 to win in 90 minutes with a price of 1/3 also offered by Ladbrokes on Ghana reaching the final while the hosts are 9/2 to win in normal time and 11/5 to progress by whatever means necessary.

But with Ghana boasting a team featuring several high profile African stars we are going with our heads rather than our hearts on this one, with the following three tips designed to see you come out on top.

Javier Balboa to score at any time @ 10/3

Not to be confused with his namesake, the Italian Stallion, Javier has been the star of the show for Equatorial Guinea which is not a massive surprise when you notice that his playing CV includes stints with both Benfica and Real Madrid.

The 29-year-old Estoril star has already scored three goals for the hosts at this tournament and as their set-piece taker looks a solid bet to find the net, particularly if the referees continue to be as generous as they have been thus far…

Ghana to win and both teams to score was 7/2 now 9/2

Despite Equatorial Guinea upsetting the applecart thus far, they look unlikely to beat Ghana who seem to have improved with every passing game under recently-installed manager Avram Grant.

Guinea may have been dispatched with a 3-0 win but with their opponents on this occasion scoring in three of the four games they have played thus far, we think there could be goals at either end with Ghana already shipping goals against Senegal and South Africa at this tournament.

Wakaso Mubarak to score at any time @ 7/2

Fellow midfielder and Chelsea star Christian Atsu may have grabbed the headlines with a match-winning brace in the last eight but it’s his teammate Wakaso who looks overdue a goal, having impressed for Ghana so far in this competition.

Mubarak finished the last Africa Cup of Nations as the Black Stars’ top scorer with four goals and despite failing to score at these finals, is more than capable of finding the net – as fans of his current club Celtic are all-too-aware.
