Man United willing to ditch one Ligue 1 star to sign another

Radamel Falcao’s time at Old Trafford is unlikely to extend beyond this season according to one newspaper, with another of Ligue 1’s top strikers supposedly being lined up to replace the Colombian.

Edinson Cavani is the big name in the frame to replace Falcao, with the Daily Star reporting United will lay £60m on the table to tempt Paris St-Germain into letting him leave.

The Uruguayan, who has never really settled properly at the Parc des Princes, was on David Moyes’ summer wishlist in 2013, but like so many other attempts to sign top stars during that window, the deal never transpired.

The critical sticking point for this to happen for Louis Van Gaal though, is that the humungous transfer kitty will only be available if Champions League qualification is secured.

At this present stage of the season as Van Gaal’s men head into their FA Cup tie with Preston, the signs are pretty good that United are heading for a return to Europe’s premier competition.

Despite the Red Devils attracting plenty of criticism for their style of play and reliance on David De Gea to keep getting them out of jail, they continue to pick up points and their 3/10 price to make the top four reflects this fact.

For the man who looks likely to give way to free up space for Cavani’s potential arrival, it’s not been the loan spell Falcao would have been hoping for or United fans were expecting.

Having arrived carrying fitness concerns it has taken the majority of the season for the Monaco striker to cement a place in the team, but even then the goals have been sparse.

Only four have come in 18 appearances in all competitions for supposedly one of the most feared strikers in world football and Van Gaal’s patience has grown thin.
