Narrow win gives Warrington fast start Myler craves

Warrington may have only just edged Hull FC in the weekend’s low-scoring affair at the KC Stadium but a win is a win and Wolves star Richie Myler won’t be complaining.

The 24-year-old scrum half explained to Ladbrokes News at the Rugby League Rocks event that a fast start is imperative under the Super League’s new Super 8 system and wit the win over the Cream coming on the back of the 22-8 victory over Salford in round one Warrington are up and running.

Read on for Myler’s views on the season ahead, some talented young Wolves and why Catalans could surprise in 2015.

What would be a successful season for Warrington in Super League XX?

I think as the seasons have gone on Warrington as a club have done really well, competing all the way to most semi-finals and finals so we want to replicate that this season and maybe go one further if we can.

I think it’s exciting with the new concept too. That challenge is going to throw up something different where you have to start the season at 100 miles per hour. Gone are the days where you could just peak at the end of the year. That’s all changed now so it’s going to be tough.

If you could pick any other Super League player to sign for Warrington this year who would you pick and why?

I like Ryan Hall. He’s a great English winger and someone who can finish a lot of tries. He’s run over me a couple of times which wasn’t nice but he’s a special talent and he someone we’d welcome in our team.

Who will be the next big thing at Warrington?

We’re blessed with a few younger players that have come into the squad and had a few games over the last season. Our back row, in particular, with the likes of James Laithwaite and Ben Currie, who played about 25 games last year and really got into the squad. They’re first team regulars now so I think you’re going to see a big year from those two.

If Ladbrokes gave you a free £100 bet (other than Warrington) to win the Super League who would pick and why?

I think Saints will be up there again, they’re a quality side and they’ve recruited well. I also think Catalan could surprise a few as they have also brought in some good players and they’ve got Michael Monaghan over there coaching now so they could be a force. If they get their road form going they will be a tough team to beat.

Ladbrokes are the proud new sponsors of the Challenge Cup, what is your favourite memory of the competition?

I was fortunate enough to play in 2012 when we won it. It’s a remarkable competition and it’s unbelievable how long it’s been running for. When you see the greats that have played at Wembley it’s an unbelievable feeling to be involved in it and it’s a great spectacle to be a part of.
