Newcastle look to summer deal for Spain under-19 international

Newcastle United are believed to be lining up another raid on the Spanish Segunda Division with Sporting Gijon youngster Jorge Mere reportedly in the Magpies’ sights.
The 17-year-old defender was previously linked with a move to St James’ Park during the January transfer window, though a deal ultimately failed to materialise.
However, fresh reports are claiming that the north east club will now look to rekindle their interest in the stopper, who has been capped by Spain at under-17, under-18 and under-19 level.
Mere’s most recent appearance for La Roja’s youth outfit came against Germany’s under-19 side, with the defender helping Spain to a 2-0 victory.
Part of a team that also included Manchester City youngster Joze Angel Pozo, a bright future in the game could await Mere and Newcastle United will be hoping it starts with a move to Tyneside.
The Magpies have turned their attentions to unearthing gems from the Spanish second-tier in recent times following the successful integration of Ayoze Perez into the Newcastle fold.
Signed at a snip for just €2m from Tenerife, the 21-year-old forward has largely impressed for the Toon since being thrust into first-team action ahead of schedule following injuries to several key strikers.
Known simply as Ayoze, the Spaniard has already scored five goals for Newcastle in the Premier League this term and looks on course to go from strength-to-strength in the English top-flight.
Mere could yet be joined at the club by fellow target David Concha of Racing Santander.
The 18-year-old winger was also linked with a Magpies move last month and the club could return to the attacker in the coming months.
Newcastle travel to the Etihad this weekend to face a Manchester City side looking to close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea.
The Magpies beat the Sky Blues on their last visit to the ground, winning 2-0 in the League Cup last October.
