Peter Reid: Aaron Lennon will offer Everton much needed pace

Everton’s deadline day signing of Aaron Lennon on loan will prove a shrewd piece of business, according to the man who gave him his professional debut.

Former Leeds United manager Peter Reid believes Lennon’s pace and trickery will give the Toffees a sense of urgency that has been somewhat lacking at times this season.

Speaking at the Ladbrokes #ForTheFans deadline day event, Reid said: “I gave Aaron his debut at Leeds many moons ago and what he has got is bags of pace to get in behind and trouble defenders.

“Roberto (Martinez) likes his side to play a certain way and they do keep the ball well but they sometimes you need a bit of pace and to get the ball forward earlier and Aaron is someone who can offer that.”

With just two wins from their last 10 games it is clear that change is required and Reid believes attacking urgency is what could turn Everton’s fortunes around, starting in the Merseyside derby this weekend.

“It’s OK keeping the ball and this is no disrespect to Roberto but sometimes you need to get the ball over the top and inject a bit of pace into the attack and Aaron will give them that option alongside Lukaku,” he added.

The Toffees host Liverpool in Saturday late kick-off and the hosts go into the game as slight underdogs with a price of 2/1.

Liverpool can be backed at 13/10 to claim three points and the local bragging rights, while a draw is rated as a 12/5 shot by Ladbrokes.
