Salford v St Helens: Visitors to run their whipping boys ragged

Published:

St Helens look to build on their winning opening-day Super League win by naming the same team that handed the Catalan Dragons an 18-7 loss a week ago.

That means skipper Jon Wilkin will deputise at scrum-half in the absence of the injured Luke Walsh, while the Salford Red Devils try to claim their first win of the campaign over a side that has used them as a punch bag in recent years.

Here are our three best bets for the game:

St Helens (-10.0) to win @ 11/10

St Helens have won all five previous Super League meetings with Iestyn Harris’ side and not just by the odd point either.

Of the five wins, three have come by 10 points or more while the opening round of Super League fixtures indicating that the trend isn’t likely to end with the latest meeting.

While the Saints won by 11 points against Catalan, Salford suffered a 14-point defeat to the Warrington Wolves.

Tom Makinson to score first @ 9/1

The 23-year-old centre is the favourite in the market to score the game’s first try and for good reason. Last season only two men crossed the try line more often than Makinson, who registered 25 scores during the campaign.

With Ladbrokes boosting his price out from 7/1, this is definitely a bet worth taking, especially as Makinson owes Salford one having been shut out by the Red Devils in last season’s two tussles.

St Helens to score first @ 4/7

With such a strong level of visiting dominance expected at AJ Bell Stadium you would expect this to be a far shorter price. The fact that it isn’t means it must definitely go into the betslip.

Taking the visitors to score the first points of the game, which they’ve done in all of the last four meetings with Salford, is a no brainer.
