Spurs planning ahead in beating two rivals to England U19 star
If the Tottenham academy has fed any position particularly well it is in central midfield, where Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb have establishing themselves in the Lilywhites’ first-team this season and Tom Carroll is getting a run on loan at Swansea.
Although centre-circle dwellers are clearly a future strength of the club’s, it hasn’t stopped the north Londoners from planning for the future in that department, as they will reportedly beat Newcastle and Aston Villa to the signing of MK Dons wonderkid Dele Alli on transfer deadline day.
Having broken into the Dons’ first-team last season, the 18-year-old has continued to impress this term and has been scouted on numerous occasions by the Premier League trio, although it is Mauricio Pochettino’s side that have made the first move with a bid.
A deal for the England U19 international, who debuted for the Milton Keynes side as a 16-year-old, is thought to have been agreed, although it looks likely that the midfielder will be loaned back to the League One side with a view to bedding him into the Spurs ranks in the future.
There is certainly little need for Alli to disrupt his development by playing for Tottenham’s youth sides for the rest of the season, with Spurs well stocked in his position thanks to Mason and Bentaleb’s emergence.
Paulinho, Mousa Dembele, Benjamin Stambouli and Etienne Capoue are all battling the home-grown duo for game time at the moment, meaning Alli would be better off staying with his hometown club before switching to north London once some of the deadwood has been moved on.
