Warrington v St.George Dragons: Wolves to do Super League proud

| 19.02.2015

It may only be an exhibition game, but under the global Rugby League spotlight pride alone will ensure this World Club Series clash featuring Warrington Wolves and Australian visitors St.George Illawarra Dragons of the NRL is a fierce encounter.

The first of two build-up games to the World Series final on Sunday should see Wolves take it to their Aussie counterparts on home soil.

Playing at the Halliwell Jones Stadium where Leeds, Castleford and Catalan Dragons all tasted defeat last season and the Salford Reds already have in 2015, Warrington are worthy 4/9 favourites.

Here are three other wagers to accompany Sky Sports 1’s headline Friday night event:

Wolves (-10) to beat Dragons @ 11/8

As mentioned before Tony Smith’s charges are strong at home regardless of opposition and there are clues from a below-par NRL season 2014 campaign for Dragons that they’ll be holes to exploit.

This handicap was hurdled in Warrington’s first outing at Halliwell against Salford Reds, while the former World Challenge winning Dragons slumped to an 11th-place finish in the NRL.

The tourists, who are still three weeks from starting the new season, ended 2014 with a -59 points difference meaning Wolves’ extra fitness should expose such defensive frailty.

Wolves/Wolves in half-time/full-time @ 8/11

The digits are reversed in the odds for this bet and it’s Warrington’s sturdy defence which should ensure it lands.

Only 14 points have been scored against the English side in their opening two Super League sojourns.

Joel Monaghan to score two or more tries @ 7/2

Playing mostly against his fellow countrymen Super League’s top try scorer of last season is certainly due to go over the line having failed to do so in his first two starts.

The flying winger and new captain of Wolves is still the most dangerous weapon in the arsenal.
