Chelsea enter the race to sign United striking flop Falcao

| 24.03.2015

He may be ‘sad’ at Manchester United but that hasn’t stopped Chelsea and Liverpool squaring off for a summer battle to land the signing of Radamel Falcao.

Reports are gathering pace that the two clubs are the forefront of a tussle to extend the Colombian’s Premier League stay.

The Sun claimed that Liverpool have been in contact with Monaco regarding a similar deal to the one he finds himself struggling to fulfil at Old Trafford.

But the Reds will have stern competition from the champions-elect according to The Telegraph.

Ladbrokes make it a 4/1 shot that the striker starts the 2015/16 season at Anfield, while it’s 10/1 he begins the campaign at Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho courted the idea of bringing Falcao to Stamford Bridge in the summer, but missed out with a move to play under Louis van Gaal instead the decision taken.

The Blues would certainly be in the best rakes in earns a week, though they would likely want more return for their cash than Manchester United are currently receiving.

In 22 appearances for the Red Devils, he has netted just four goals, his total contribution equalling a goal every 307 mins – over five hours.

Monaco could wait and see which side are willing to meet the striker’s £41m release clause before they agree to let Falcao go out on loan again, though who would be willing to pay that amount based on this season’s exploits remains to be seen.

Mourinho is reportedly in a good position to convince Falcao to move to Stamford Bridge, due to his close relationship with the 29-year-old’s agent Jorge Mendes, should the Principality Club agree to him leaving.

The champions-elect could well be in the market for a striker in the summer with Didier Drogba facing retirement at the end of the current campaign.

With Diego Costa currently favourite to top the goalscoring charts in the Premier League this season, a notable back-up should he face more injury or suspension woe could be high on Mourinho’s list of priorities.
