Cheltenham day 1: Alternative Mullins selection makes Longshot Lucky 15

When it comes to the Cheltenham Festival we’re all after a bit of value, especially as we bid to get off to a flyer on day one.

But rather than just blindly look towards the favourites to boost our Prestbury Park war chests we’re going for a different tack altogether.

Each day throughout the Festival our Longshot Lucky 15 promises to be an incredible thrill-a-minute rush the like you’ve never experienced before.

Or something like that.

Here are four selections that could completely change your Cheltenham:

14:05 – Arkle Chase – Josses Hill

My esteemed colleague Matt Mower told me when recording our day one podcast that it’s quite simple when it comes to Josses Hill.

Some horses can jump and some can’t was his blunt assessment with this selection placed in the latter category.

But I’m putting my faith in Nicky Henderson’s charge in the Arkle.

Last year’s Supreme Novices’ runner-up has had an inconsistent start to his chasing career but having won a 2m contest at Doncaster it seems that this distance could suit. A place is by mean no means beyond him.

14:40 – Ultima Business Solutions Handicap Chase – According to Trev

You’re losing faith already, aren’t you?

Just look at the price! Plus, the fact is eight of the last 10 winners carried 10-12 or less and seven winners were rated between 130 – 143.

According to Trev fits both of those trends. And based on that crude analysis and the fact he’s had seven previous trips to Cheltenham, there’s hope yet.

16:00 – Mares’ Hurdle – Glens Melody

Let’s face it. Nothing is going to get near to Annie Power. But of those runners vying for the places it’s difficult to look past Glens Melody.

Runner-up in last year’s renewal, she was eye-catching at Warwick last time out too and improving at the right time of the season.

16:40 – National Hunt Chase – Perfect Gentleman

This would be arguably Willie Mullins’ most popular winner of the day. At least it would be in my eyes anyway.

The venerable handler’s son Patrick will be onboard this selection, a horse that has class and has been up against some decent types of late.

Second to Gilgamboa last time out, he was also in a decent race when falling at Fairyhouse on his start before that.

Perfect Gentleman has a Grade 3 win at Cork on his CV and should go well at a price.
