Hipster Tipster: PSG thoroughbreds in Cheltenham-inspired tips

Published:

I know as much about horse racing as the next man, which goes some way to explaining why I forced myself to take last Monday off work in order to scour the Cheltenham festival race listings in search of football-related names to back.

There was THE NEW ONE – an ode to Jose Mourinho’s Gallic conqueror Laurent Blanc surely, while AVB was ably represented by THE YOUNG MASTER.

My belief in the former was further enhanced after finding a rather fetching photograph demonstrating the Frenchman’s love of the all things equine.

THE OLD GUARD of Serie A were also represented with WOUNDED WARRIOR a possible nod to the perma-crocked Kevin Strootman.

SPLASH OF GINGE was read as Ronald Koeman, leaving me with a bumper set of bets.

Little did I realise that, like a rash Zlatan Ibrahimovic tackle, my tips would prove costly though not ultimately lethal.

Why else would I be back here, typing away from the comfort of my newly-constructed futon, giving you my latest European tips.

And yeah, these are also Cheltenham themed, because even us continental football fans love the festival, when we can find time to properly research our tips rather than rushing the job in order to see how Dani Osvaldo is faring at Boca Juniors – which is well, as it turns out.

Villarreal to beat Almeria @ 9/10

Generously priced for a victory over their relegation-threatened hosts, following a few second place finishes in recent times, the Yellow Submarine should still romp to victory here having beaten Almeria in each of their previous four league meetings.

Genoa to beat Chievo @ 17/20

Dark horse for Europa League qualification (geddit?), Genoa look likely winners against this lowly Chievo side after smashing their cross-town rivals Hellas Verona 5-2 last time out at home. The flying Donkeys look likely to finish second best here.

Wolfsburg to beat Freiburg @ 4/11

All right, maybe the choice of Wolfsburg may be one more in-tune with a dog racing-themed tips article but they have been galloping along nicely in the Bundesliga of late and with Freiburg losing three of their last four on the road in the league, only one outcome looks likely.

PSG  to beat Bordeaux @ 19/20

The Parisiens graduated to Champions League thoroughbreds this week with a battle draw against Chelsea that left even the Special One a little limited when it came to coming up with excuses after the game. With Zlatan back in their stable too, it could be vintage PSG against Bordeaux.
