Ladbrokes Poll: Bertrand beats Austin as notable England absentee

| 24.03.2015

Ryan Bertrand is the player who should feel most aggrieved at his omission from Roy Hodgson’s latest England squad, according to a poll of Ladbrokes News readers.

Quizzed on who they felt was the most notable absentee from the Three Lions party, a whopping 42 per cent of respondents voted for the Southampton star.

Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin was a somewhat distant second having scored 25 per cent of the vote.

This came despite the 25-year-old scoring 14 Premier League goals so far this term for the relegation-threatened Rangers.

Manchester United’s Ashley young, who has enjoyed something of a renaissance under Louis van Gaal this season, finished third in the voting with 16 per cent.

The 29-year-old was just ahead of Burnley’s Danny Ings, who picked up a 14 per cent share after impressing with the Clarets in the top flight this term.

There was little backing for West Ham United outsider James Tomkins, however, with just three per cent of readers endorsing the Irons defender as unfortunate not to get an England call-up.

The Three Lions are due to meet Lithuania this Friday in the latest of their Euro 2016 qualifiers and with Danny Rose and Harry Kane potentially in action, we could soon see whether Hodgson was right to exclude the likes of Bertand and Austin.
