Manchester City battling Real Madrid for Dutch defensive ace
Manchester City are reportedly looking to Holland and PSV Eindhoven star Jetro Willems as a potential summer target, according to reports on the continent.
Capped 13 times by the Oranje to date, the 20-year-old has been a key component of PSV’s impressive campaign under Philip Cocu this term.
Eight points clear of nearest Eredivisie challengers, the Rood-witten are on course to end Ajax’s recent dominance of the Dutch top-flight, which has seen the Amsterdam giants claim the last four consecutive league titles.
Willems has been a major part of the success enjoyed so far, with the left-back weighing in with 14 assists and a further two goals domestically.
With a further three assists to his name in the Europa League, the defender is starting to show the kind of form that saw Bert van Marwijk select him for Holland’s doomed Euro 2012 campaign.
The youngest ever player to play at a European Championships at the age of just 18 years and 71 days of age, the tournament proved to be a baptism of fire for the youngster, who struggled in games against group of death opponents Denmark, Germany and Portugal.
Though he missed out on a place in Louis van Gaal’s squad for last summer’s World Cup, time away from the national side has proven to be something of a blessing.
Recently named in WhoScored.com’s Eredivise team of the season so far, having picked up an average rating of 7.51 out of 10 this season, the future looks bright for the Dutchman once again.
Little wonder then that Willems has emerged as a target not only for Manchester City but also Real Madrid.
Dutch news site Spits Nieuws is claiming that the Champions League chasing pair are both keeping tabs on the full-back ahead of a potential summer move for the player.
Continue to impress in the Eredivisie and Willems could soon be on his way to the Premier League.
