Man Utd hero more popular than Ronaldo for goalscorer bet

Published:

Wayne Rooney was a more popular choice to score this weekend than former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, according to data compiled by Ladbrokes.

The Red Devils captain was the most popular goalscorer pick among customers, with the England man backed by more than double the number who tipped CR7 to score.

Rooney ranked highest in the number of bets taken, with Ronaldo third behind Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero.

It was the second consecutive La Liga game in which the Portuguese attacker has failed to find the net, while Aguero has now gone three games without a goal.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, who was the fourth most popular choice, also failed to deliver in the Blues’ 1-1 draw with Southampton.

The same cannot be said for teammate Diego Costa, however, with the Spain international fifth in the rankings.

Costa opened the scoring for Chelsea against the Saints, ensuring all those backing the 26-year-old had a happy Sunday.

The majority of the attention appeared to be on Wayne Rooney and Manchester United though with nine per cent of all the weekend’s football bets placed on their Old Trafford clash with Tottenham.

More specificially still, a whopping 25 per cent of all Premier League bets went on this top-of-the-table encounter, which saw United close the gap on Manchester City.

City’s 1-0 loss to Burnley was a result few could have predicted and that certainly looked the case at Ladbrokes with just 20 per cent all Win/Draw/Win singles placed on the Clarets.

George Boyd meanwhile attracted less than one per cent of the First Goalscorer bets polled, with Aguero attracting 75 per cent with David Silva and Edin Dzeko taking 5 per cent and 4.5 per cent of the total respectively.

Rooney’s goal against Spurs made it five in six for the 29-year-old with Manchester United next in action against Liverpool.
