Newcastle battling Napoli for Germany international

Newcastle United are believed to be keeping tabs on Bundesliga winner Andreas Beck ahead of a potential cut-price move for the Germany international.

According to The Mirror, the Magpies are preparing to go head-to-head with Napoli for the services of the former VfB Stuttgart full-back.

The report claims that the 28-year-old could be available for as little as £1.5m, having spent seven seasons with Hoffenheim.

A Bundesliga winner with Stuttgart back in 2007, Beck was part of the Germany under-21 side that won the European Championships in 2009.

Part of the team that hammered England 4-0 in the final, six of Beck’s teammates at that tournament would go on to win the World Cup in Brazil last summer.

Capped nine times by Die Mannschaft at senior level to date, the Russia-born defender will be hoping that a move to either the Premier League or Serie A will put him back in the spotlight for national team contention.

A regular for Hoffenheim throughout his time at the club, Beck took over as club captain in the 2010-11 season following the departure of Per Nilsson for Nuremburg.

Capable of playing at either left-back or right-back, Beck’s focus, marauding runs and excellent final ball would make him a valuable addition to Newcastle.

However the arrival of the Germany international could stir speculation linking Daryl Janmaat with a move away from St James’ Park.

The Holland international has excelled throughout the season so far with the Toon and could opt to push for a move away from the club this summer.

A Manchester United switch, and the opportunity to link up with former Oranje manager Louis van Gaal, is one possibility for the defender who is not likely to be short of potential suitors come the summer.

For now though, Newcastle appear to be focused on sealing a deal to bring Beck to the club.
