Newcastle could rescue former Arsenal star from Bundesliga woes

| 25.03.2015

Nicklas Bendtner could be given a reprieve from his current situation at Bundesliga club Wolfsburg, but it may only come if the 27-year-old reduces his contractual demands.

The former Arsenal striker has been speaking this week of his unhappiness with the Wolves in Germany, where he has been forced to play a bit-part role this term.

Brought to the club on a free transfer over the summer, a lack of fitness coupled with the form of players like Bas Dost saw Bendtner’s first team opportunities severely limited.

That situation has continued throughout the season for the Dane, who has so far started just three Bundesliga games for Wolfsburg this term.

In an interview with Danish news source Bold.dk, the striker said:

“I would have liked the game a lot more [sic], because I have been training really well …. So am I happy with my situation? No, not at all.”

Likely to be seeking a move away from the club in the summer, in the event that the situation remains the same, Bendtner could emerge as a potential target for Newcastle United.

The Magpies were thought to be keen on recruiting the forward in the summer, with The Metro reporting as much back in May.

At the time, Bendtner’s wage demands were thought to be a major stumbling block to any potential St James’ Park switch.

However in the wake of his humbling experience in Germany, the Denmark international could be more flexible when it comes to his personal terms.

The Toon are certainly on the lookout for another striker, following a season in which new signings like Emmanuel Riviere and Facundo Ferreyra have failed to make an impact in the Premier League.

With Bendtner likely to be available as part of a cut-price deal, it could prove to be a canny addition to the Toon fold.

A prolific goalscorer at international level with 26 in 64 outings for Denmark, the former Arsenal man will be out to impress when the Scandinavians meet Team USA this week.
