Poll: Who should have got a call-up in latest England squad?

Having netted 29 goals in all competitions this season, had Roy Hodgson left Harry Kane out of his England squad for the games against Lithuania and Italy, we’d have all thought he was mad.

But even with the Tottenham man deservedly getting his international call-up, there remain a few curious inclusions and head-scratching omissions in the 23-man party.

Should his team-mate Andros Townsend, who has made just nine Premier League starts be in the squad? And what about four-goal striker Danny Welbeck? Is that international form?

But what we want to know for today’s poll is which player can feel aggrieved most at missing out on that Three Lions squad?

Here is our shortlist…

Charlie Austin – QPR

The striker’s rise from playing in the Wessex Premier Division with Poole Town, right up to the Premier League has been a meteoric one.

And he’s certainly taken it in his stride, with 15 top flight goals to his name, he’s the fourth most potent striker in the division. Would it have been different if he played for one of the ‘big four’ perhaps?

Danny Ings – Burnley

Another striker that has been a major player in his side’s campaign. Without the 23-year-old’s nine goals this season, they would surely be in a bigger relegation fight than they already are.

His strikes have accounted for over a third of the Clarets’ goals this term, and with the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle reportedly sniffing round him, his stay in the Premier League could be extended even if Burnley do go down.

Ashley Young – Man Utd

It’s probably fair to say that Young has made it into the England squad at times in the past when he wasn’t playing this well for his club.

The winger has delivered some of his best performances this season in a Manchester Untied side that has blown hot and cold, but with the Red Devils looking back to their best recently, he’s been able to shine.

Ryan Bertrand – Southampton

If an integral part of the Premier League’s stingiest defence can’t get into the squad, then who does make it is anyone’s guess.

The left-back has popped up with two goals and two assists in the league this season, and with Southampton conceding just 21 times in the campaign, he looks the perfect all-rounder to add competition to the defensive ranks.

James Tomkins – West Ham

The Hammers centre-back may not be the obvious choice for an England call-up, but stats don’t lie.

The 25-year-old holds the second highest average match rating for any Englishman according to whoscored.com, behind only Phil Jones (seriously). He has come of age at the Boleyn Ground under Sam Allardyce, and if key injuries were to hit the England backline in the future, his time could be near.
