Newcastle plot loan bid for Manchester United prospect

| 14.04.2015

Newcastle United could be set to take a rather unusual step in their pursuit of a new striker this summer, with the club linked to Manchester United youngster James Wilson.

A report in The Metro is claiming that the Magpies have approached the Red Devils regarding the possibility of taking the forward on a season-long loan next term.

United manager Louis van Gaal is thought to be open to the idea of allowing the 19-year-old to leave Old Trafford, albeit temporarily, in a bid to gain more first team experience in the Premier League.

At present, Wilson’s route to the Manchester United starting line-up has been blocked by the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie among others.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have looked desperately short of attacking options in the Premier League this term with Papiss Cisse either injured or suspended for long stretches of the campaign.

Last summer the Toon recruited four attackers to the St James’ Park cause with largely disastrous results.

Siem de Jong has been sidelined with injury for almost the entire season while Emmanuel Riviere has underwhelmed and the on-loan Facundo Ferreyra has yet to appear for the Toon first-team.

Only Ayoze Perez has proven to be an effective acquisition to date, with the former Tenerife forward still something of a work in progress.

Wilson is highly regarded at Old Trafford, with Ladbrokes News previously comparing the 19-year-old with fellow Englishman Harry Kane.

So far, the Manchester United man has managed three goals in 13 stop-start appearances for the Red Devils first-team.

He would not be the first United youngster to move to Newcastle on loan either with Giuseppe Rossi previously spending time with the Magpies, though it proved to be a largely ineffective spell.

The Toon, meanwhile, could yet face competition for Wilson with fellow north east side Hull thought to be keen on recruiting the forward.
