Outgoing Bundesliga boss favourite to take over Liverpool job

Published:

Fabian Delph’s Wembley winner not only denied Steven Gerrard the chance to add to his Liverpool medal haul, but put Brendan Rodgers on the wrong end of history.

The trophy-less campaign the Reds are now set to conclude will be a third on the bounce under the Northern Irishman, making the tactician the first Reds manager since the 1950s to complete his first three terms at the club without silverware.

Hot on the heels of Gerrard’s infamous slip against Chelsea that lost the Merseyside outfit last season’s Premier League, Liverpool have now fluffed semi-final outings in the two domestic cup competitions this campaign, causing Rodgers and others to question the side’s big-game mentality.

While it is perfectly apt that fingers are pointed at a squad with one outgoing leader and precious little other voices, Rodgers himself will find the heat turned back up on his own role at the club.

Ladbrokes have priced up four potential candidates to take over from the former Swansea man should he bid farewell this summer, inspiring news.ladbrokes to put each one under the microscope:

Jurgen Klopp @ 6/1

The outgoing Borussia Dortmund chief may have endured a season of greater heartache than Rodgers, having seen his side linger around the relegation places until after the winter break, but his trophy-winning acumen cannot be ignored.

A two-time Bundesliga champion, as well as a decorated cup coach, Liverpool could turn to the German to teach the squad how to get over the line.

Frank de Boer @ 8/1

Although he’s won four Eredivisie titles, that league’s reputation as a lesser light perhaps counts against the Ajax boss when compared to Klopp, but that doesn’t seem to have deterred the Reds.

De Boer claims he turned down the chance to take over in the Anfield dugout before the club hired Rodgers and sacking the Northern Irishman could prompt the club to return for their supposed original target.

Slaven Bilic @ 10/1

The Merseysiders have been burned by Bilic’s burgeoning reputation on the touchline this season, when being knocked out of the Europa League by his Besiktas side.

His only failure in management came in a season-long spell at Lokomotiv Moscow, but he has since flourished in Turkey with a win percentage of 52.94 and has spoken of a desire to manage in England.

Ronald Koeman @ 12/1

It wouldn’t be the first time a Southampton manager has jumped up the Premier League ladder after one good season on the south coast and the path between St Mary’s and Anfield became well trodden from a players’ point of view last summer.
