How Twitter reacted to AP McCoy’s last Grand National
Published:Whether you’re a hardened punter or a once-a-year participant, it’s likely you’ll have stuck a nugget or two on yesterday’s Crabbies Grand National, the undisputed betting event of the year.
In a race that was dominated by the retiring AP McCoy and the romance of “Champ” claiming a famous win in his last race at Aintree, his mount Shutthefrontdoor went off as clear 6/1 favourite.
As it was, McCoy, and the rest of the country, were left disappointed as the Jonjo O’Neill-trained eight-year-old faded after the final hurdle to finish fifth.
Many Clouds was the 25/1 winner, handing jockey Leighton Aspell a second consecutive victory. Here’s how Twitter reacted to the greatest race in the world:
Plenty of people take an alternative view when selecting their Grand National horse. Britain’s Got Talent were no different, but their wacky reasoning only landed them the sixth-place horse,
We’re no experts, but the #BGT prize includes a spot at the Royal Variety Performance, so our #GrandNational tip is Royale Knight. G’luck!!

Ruby Walsh won the National at the first attempt 15 years ago, but was brought down on Ballycasey early on this year. He still found a way to stay involved in the race though.

Walsh’s great rival, McCoy was riding his last National, he made some grand claims about what he’d do if he won it.
It’s amazing to think this could be the last time we see @AP_McCoy ride in a race. If he wins he retires on the spot. pic.twitter.com/m0RVExzSdS

Ultimately though, the Champ was left trailing Many Clouds and the belonged to Leighton Aspell.

Aspell’s feat as a consecutive Grand National winner made history
Leighton Aspell becomes the first jockey to win back-to-back #GrandNationals since Brian Fletcher on Red Rum in 1974 on Many Clouds.

As winning punters counted their cash, it could not be denied that the race was well received.
