How Twitter reacted to Townsend’s goal and England’s Italy draw

Published:

With the “hard work” already done following a 4-0 victory over Lithuania in last week’s Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley, attentions this week turned to a largely meaningless friendly between England and Italy.

Yet no one told the fans on Twitter, with social media awash with comment on everything involving the Three Lions, Harry Kane and a certain Mr Andros Townsend.

Here are some of the best Tweets from a reasonably entertaining night in Turin.

After scoring after 79 seconds against the mighty Lithuania, fans were trying not to get too carried away with the news that Kane was set to start against Italy. They failed though.

Still, while comparing the Tottenham youngster to Superman was daft, it soon appeared to be something of a sensible suggestion when put alongside Rodney Marsh’s latest, downright daft, comments.

One man who appeared happy to have Kane in the ranks was good old Roy Hodgson though, as this lovely little dance demonstrates.

Mind you, ESPN seemed eager to put the Spurs starlet in his place.

Elsewhere, Joe Hart garnered some attention for what would be his 50th appearance for England – someone even put together a lovely highlights reel.

Meanwhile, the fans were looking forward to the match…

In a nervy first half, Italy took the lead with a goal from a misfiring Southampton striker. Typical…

Most people couldn’t stay mad at the photogenic forward for too long though.

Opta highlighted one rather concerning statistic for England fans too.

At half-time, whoever was running the official Southampton FC Twitter account appeared to be in shock at seeing Pelle score an actual goal, opting to post a series of pictures as proof to any Saints fans out there.

Sky Sports News, meanwhile, brought us all the important information from the games that mattered.

With England starting the second half brightly and Kane looking increasingly unlikely to score a goal of any kind, Roy Hodgson decided to turn to the Three Lions’ previous boy wonder – Townsend.

No, not Andy – he was doing a fine job on commentary duty.

Really good…

As he always has done…

Back to the game and it was Andros, not Andy, who delivered a great equaliser for England.

And if there is one thing he loves, it’s a shot from outside the box.

The game finished as a draw, with England much improved in the second period.

The final word must go to Townsend though, who had an Alan Partridge-style “needless to say I had the last laugh” moment with Paul Merson on Twitter. Nice.
