Arsenal looking to be destination number one for Chelsea stopper

Published:

Any mathematician will tell you that two into one won’t go, and it’s this numerical predicament which means Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is sure to move on this summer.

Displaced from his position as the Blues’ trusted number one by Thibaut Courtois this season, the Czech international is seeking pastures new and he may not be moving far to find them.

Arsenal have long been linked with a potential swoop for the Chelsea stalwart and as the season nears conclusion Jose Mourinho has admitted his powerlessness to prevent the move, thereby indicating its likelihood.

“If it’s in my hands he (Cech) would never go, would never go to big clubs with fantastic teams. Big candidates to win the Premier League. I would never let him go. But it’s not in my hands,” said Mourinho.

With many of the game’s notable observers touting Arsenal as the biggest threat to Chelsea retaining their title in 2015/16, it is easy to understand Mourinho’s concerns.

Although Colombian keeper David Ospina has performed admirably during his debut campaign in north London, dislodging established Gunners stopper Wojciech Szczesny in the process, Cech is still a level above either man.

It’s long been levelled at Arsene Wenger that nailing down that elusive fourth Premier League title will remain impossible without a truly world-class stopper between the sticks.

Capturing Cech would be the perfect riposte from the Frenchman, who in theory only has one more full season to bag said title, as his two-year contract extension is due to run out in the summer of 2016.

That places huge significance on the current transfer window. Cech is still wanted by the likes of Paris-Saint Germain too, so the Gunners will have to roll the red carpet out to land their man.
