Danny Maguire: “I’m selfish and want to win it all”

Leeds Rhinos star Danny Maguire can’t split the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup and the Super League Grand Final on his list of priorities so is greedily gunning for both trophies this season.

That’s what the 32-year-old stand-off revealed in an exclusive chat with Ladbrokes News earlier this week, saying both competitions hold equal billing in his heart.

“I think the journey we went on with the Challenge Cup last year was really special and is still fresh in the memory,” he said.

“Both competitions are equally special and it’s hard to separate them. This week is all about the Challenge Cup though, so the focus has to be on that. I’m selfish though and I want to win it all.”

The one-club Rhinos man also believes that while the current Wembley Stadium is a fairly new development the history of travelling down to London for the final is not something that should be messed with.

“I know it’s a new stadium but it’s still a great place to play. I’ve been lucky to play there a few times, and while it’s a tough place to lose it’s a special place when you win,” he said.

“The Grand Final works well at Old Trafford. As a Leeds United supporter it’s hard for me to say that it’s a nice stadium but it is and there’s a great atmosphere. However, I think we’ll always keep up the tradition of having it at Wembley.”

Maguire explained that the last five minutes of last year’s Final win over Castleford is still fresh in his mind and as the best memory of his Challenge Cup career to date a repeat against the Tigers would be his dream final for this year.

“I live quite close to Cas so I get a bit of stick from the locals but I enjoy it and I’d have to say a repeat of last year’s final would be a dream come true” he added.

Leeds are the 4/9 favourites to beat Huddersfield this weekend and progress through to the seventh round, while the Giants can be backed at 15/8 to spoils Maguire’s hopes of defending Leeds’ crown.
