Last season Liverpool fans were treated to a lorry load of goals and a return to the Champions League after four seasons languishing in the top-flight’s purgatory positions of 6,7th and 8th.

However, rather than push on from their nearest ever tilt at a Premier League title into paradise, Brendan Rodgers’ entertainers of 2013/14 have never quite recovered from losing Luis Suarez in the summer and Daniel Sturridge for the majority of the season either.

The highest the Reds can now hope to finish is their current position of fifth, though the more cynical fans will hope it is seventh or eighth, with Aston Villa winning the cup then ensuring the Europa League is swerved next season.
