Spurs taking novel approach to land free-agent Burnley striker

Published:

Danny Ings is about to become one of the most in-demand free transfers in the country, yet could still be sold by Burnley for a whopping fee.

The Turf Moor striker, who has attracted interest from a host of clubs both on these shores and abroad, will see his contract at the Lancashire club expire this summer. However, the latest party interested in securing his services are taking a left-field approach to their pursuit.

Rather than wait for Ings to become a free agent, with only compensation due to Burnley once his contract expires, Tottenham are reportedly set to offer the recently relegated club £12m for their star man, in a bid to blow all rival suitors out of the water.

Albeit, the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle would only have to pay around £3m for the England U21 international should they wait to go down the compensation route, which would be a bargain in anyone’s book for a young, developing striker.

However, Daniel Levy, always one for a shrewd move in the transfer market, thinks he can steal a march on other clubs by looking to agree a deal with both Burnley and Ings before his deal in the north runs out.

The north Londoners are clearly keen to tap up Burnley for their emerging talent, as it was reported yesterday that Mauricio Pochettino and co are about to trigger a release clause for right-back Kieran Trippier.

Ladbrokes make it a 4/11 chance that Trippier signs on the dotted line with the Lilywhites, but still rate Liverpool as the most likely destination for Ings, at 1/4.

Spurs are second favourites in the betting, at odds of 7/2, while at 8/1 bar it seems unlikely that the Manchester Uniteds, Real Sociedads and Bournemouths of this world will play much part in the striker’s future.

Ings scored 11 top-flight goals for Burnley this season, but was unable to preserve their Premier League status. The club are now 14/1 shots to win next season’s Championship.
