Accuracy off tee gives 50/1 shot Bohn chance at St.Jude Classic

The prelude to the US Open for PGA Tour players is the stalwart FedEx St.Jude Classic, played for the 27th time in succession over the notoriously tricky TPC Southwind course, in Memphis.

Revamped in 2004, TPC Southwind was the most difficult par 70 (35-35) outside of the majors for the second time in three years in 2014.

The toughest challenge for those tuning up for the season’s second major are narrow targets off the tees, placing more than usual emphasis on precision with the big stick.

Clearly there is plenty of form in the books to go on given the continuous running of this event and marrying previous good showings in Tennessee with the vital stat of driving accuracy, seems the best route to punting success.

2012 winner Dustin Johnson tops the betting at 5/1, as he looks to join the likes of David Toms and Justin Leonard as multiple St.Jude champions.

Recent finishes of T8 at the Byron Nelson and 13th at the Memorial show DJ’s game is in great shape, though his famed length off the tee hasn’t necessarily been matched by accuracy, which could let the favourite down at TPC Soutwind.

He ranks 177th out of 201 in driving accuracy, while of those at the sharp end of the market only Webb Simpson (16/1) and Graeme McDowell (40/1) feature in the top 35 for this vital stat.

A resurgent Simpson, who finished runner-up at Quail Hollow on his last appearance, is certainly one to include for a wager, having tied for third here last year.

However, a little way down the betting a lesser name than the former US Open champion gets the highest each-way recommendation and that’s Jason Bohn at 50/1.

Bohn has shown expert control off the tee with driver in hand in his best season on the PGA Tour to date, where only four men can better his 71.54 percentage of fairways hit.

Picking out the short grass has served him very well at TPC Southwind in the last two years, with successive top 25s, while recent finishes of T9 at Quail Hollow, then T2 at Colonial, suggest the Pennsylvania native is ready to bask in some real limelight.
