Back Arsenal man to make England impact in win over Slovenia

Published:

England return to competitive action in Slovenia on Sunday evening and reports suggest that Theo Walcott’s fine end to the season with Arsenal will see him rewarded with a starting berth.

This promises to be good news for England and the forward whose battle with injuries have prevented him from playing more than around 15 minutes from the bench in this qualifying campaign so far.

However, Walcott’s late surge in form for Arsenal coinciding with an extended dip for Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling should see him occupy one of the forward positions from the off.

Walcott bagged a final-day hat-trick against West Brom in the Premier League, before getting on the FA Cup final scoresheet and he’s previously scored a famous hat-trick in Croatia for his country.

The 26-year-old is also on the verge of signing a new deal at the Emirates, so all in all it’s looking like it could be a great summer for Walcott.

Ladbrokes offering of 9/5 on a goal anytime for the Gunner therefore looks plump, while combining a Walcott strike with an England win could be the better choice at 13/5.

Despite drawing criticism of a dreary display in their recent friendly against Ireland, Roy Hodgson’s men have been imperious in Group E to date, winning all five games for the loss of a single goal.

This kind of form cannot be argued with and although England are away from home a 3-1 victory over their hosts at Wembley showed the gulf in class between the teams.

Having averaged exactly three goals per game thus far in qualifying, backing England to notch 2-3 more at 27/20 also holds plenty of appeal.
