Benzema may be pawn in Man Utd and Real Madrid negotiations yet

| 11.06.2015

Finding fresh meat on the bones of David De Gea’s speculated move to Real Madrid is a hard task even for a skilled butcher, but the tipping point in the saga could still hinge on the future of Karim Benzema.

According to the Telegraph’s Northern Football Correspondent Mark Ogden – a journalist with a finger on the Old Trafford pulse one would assume – Manchester United aren’t suspending hope of landing the French international as recompense for De Gea moving to Madrid.

Until something concrete is offered by the Spanish giants to the English club for their star goalkeeper’s services, it’s still a case of best guessing, though the same paper report that once the Euro qualifiers are done, a bid will be formally tabled.

However, there are still some facts to work with which crystallise the likelihood of this potential switch-up involving Benzema, and quite possibly some cash, happening.

De Gea has a year left on his contract, meaning at this point United at least have a degree of power in the negotiations, though their reluctance to see such a prized asset scarper for free next summer means the club will be receptive to Madrid’s overtures.

Delaying the inevitable seems pointless when the Premier League club have already drawn up a list of viable replacements, and could crucially fill another void within their squad.

Benzema is known to be much admired by Louis van Gaal, who requires fresh blood up front to reinvigorate a strikeforce set to shed at least two of its number.

Radamel Falcao will not be appearing in Manchester red again, joined in all probability by Dutchman Robin van Persie, who is seeking pastures new if speculation is to be believed.

The need for Los Blancos to finally replace legendary keeper Iker Casillas is another pressure point which could outweigh their desires to keep hold of a trusted source of goals, when they have Cristiano Ronaldo to fall back on.
