Turn up for the books as Arsenal man becomes Real Madrid target

| 25.06.2015

However unlikely Sergio Ramos’ move to Manchester United may seem, the man Real Madrid want to replace the Spaniard with should he leave strikes as even more implausible.

Arsenal star Laurent Koscielny is the player reportedly lined up by Los Blancos to fill any Ramos-shaped hole, with Rafael Benitez keen to pair the Gunner with his compatriot Raphael Varane at the heart of the Bernabeu club’s defence.

After initially struggling following a £10m move from Lorient, Koscielny has blossomed into a key performer for Arsene Wenger in the past few seasons.

His partnership with Per Mertesacker is one of few areas of the Arsenal squad that isn’t constantly called into question and it would be a bizarre move from the long-standing manager to disrupt one of the more consistent parts of his side before a title tilt.

Ladbrokes make the north Londoners the 5/1 third favourites to win the Premier League next season and after securing the signature of Petr Cech to mind their net, there is a growing feeling that Arsenal are just a couple of big signings away from a serious challenge.

Not only that, but Koscielny has only recently extended his contract at the Emirates, putting pen to paper on a new deal last month and has won two FA Cups in two seasons with the Gunners.

Naturally, links to one of the biggest clubs on the planet are sure to peak the player’s interest, but a hell of a lot needs to happen before any dreams can be made a reality.
