Betting with heads over hearts is the name of the game where England Women’s World Cup campaign is concerned, as Group F reaches its conclusion.
England have given themselves a decent chance of qualification thanks to their 2-1 win over Mexico, though failure to get anything from their curtain raiser with France could yet bite them on the behinds.
Next opponents Colombia have caused shockwaves in the group, disregarding France’s standing in the world rankings of third, by beating them 2-0, which means the south Americans sit pretty at the top of the group, with the pressure all on England.
Owing to their hugely unexpected win over one of the tournament favourites, Colombia’s price of 11/2 for the win looks as golden as their kit.
Meanwhile, although they were the better team against Mexico, Mark Sampson’s England side look far too short in the betting at 8/15.
The Three Lionesses’ opening display against France lacked cohesion and imagination in equal measures and defeating Mexico by a single goal hardly set the tournament alight.
Fran Kirby’s individual effort which showed neat footwork and an astute, improvised finish was an obvious highlight of the campaign to date, though comparisons between her and Lionel Messi are frankly ludicrous, even in jest.
Karen Bardsley does not inspire any confidence in the net and defensive frailties against France were all too evident.
They still conceded 17 shots, seven of which were on target against a side who are ranked 19 places below them last time out against Mexico as well.
On all known evidence from the tournament so far, the 27/10 on Colombia in the double chance market rates a corker.
