Just who is the £22m Real Madrid unknown Liverpool want?

| 12.07.2015

Liverpool and England forward Raheem Sterling looks set for Manchester City after wangling his way out of the Reds’ pre-season tour of Thailand, Australia and Malaysia, but boss Brendan Rodgers is reportedly ready to strike while the iron is hot for a replacement.

The Northern Irishman has already seen Roberto Firmino, Nathaniel Clyne, James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan and Joe Gomez arrive this summer, for a potential combined outlay of over £50m, but with that amount looking likely to come back in from Sterling’s sale alone, Rodgers isn’t finished.

Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke has long been linked with a switch to the Merseyside giants, and rumours regarding a Liverpool move for Real Madrid holding-midfielder Asier Illarramendi aren’t going away, but the latest report in the Sunday People suggests a teammate of the aforementioned Spaniard is their immediate target.

Winger Denis Cheryshev is the subject of a £22m bid from Liverpool, according to the People, after a couple of seasons on loan at Sevilla and Villarreal following the 24-year-old’s failure to make a first-team impact at the Bernabeu, where he has been on the books since 2002.

Having been barely used under Unai Emery at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan during 2013/14, Cheryshev took his chances for the Yellow Submarine last term, bagging four goals and laying on nine assists in just 18 La Liga starts.

That has clearly caught the attention of Rodgers, although many media sources see Liverpool’s move for the seven-cap Russian international as bad news for 19-year-old winger Jordon Ibe.

There’s fresh speculation that Jordon Ibe could leave Anfield again on loan

Having already been on loan at Derby and Birmingham over the past couple of campaigns, Ibe may be sent out for a temporary move again, despite signing a new five-year contract in the North West seven weeks ago.
